Sustainable Fashion 101: Recycle Your Clothes

The actual lifespan for an item of clothing typically span as long as three years. And, since we produce millions of tons of clothes each year (in its 2018 production, it was around 17 million), the number of items consumed over a lifetime is still great and the number of items wasted is still greater! For every item we produce, we throw away at least one. This is probably why people are increasingly leaning towards sustainable fashion and recycling their clothes and fabrics.

So, if you wish to discover more about this practice, then you have come to the right place.

Fashion and lifestyle ethical and sustainable

Why Recycle Your Clothes?

A large variety of fabrics end up in landfills. One single item can take decades to decompose fully depending on the material it is composed of. In the decomposition process, it can release excessive amounts of methane and carbon dioxide, both of which are damaging to our atmosphere. But equally important is that the breakdown of some clothing components takes anywhere between 20 to 200 years! It goes without doubt that recycling clothes are quite a difficult feat indeed…

Despite this, people recycle their clothes simply because it goes a long way in lowering their carbon footprint. Repurposing reusable old materials and garments helps us maintain a clean universe and reduce waste.

Engaging in Responsible Fashion

1. Donate Your Old Clothes and Garments

The easiest way to get recycle old clothes without throwing them away is to donate them. Even a worn-out piece of clothing can help keep a less fortunate fellow warm in the upcoming months of cold weather. There are several international organizations such as the Red Cross that you can donate your old pieces of fabric to. Besides, you can also donate to local alternatives, churches, mosques, synagogues, and other such religious entities. Orphanages and home shelters are good options as well.

2. Buy Second-Hand Clothes

You can find some amazing stuff at second-hand and thrift stores and that too at a very minimal cost. Another advantage to second-hand stores is that they purchase items in large quantities as well as small batches. Many will buy items individually, so try to locate one that is close to your place. This way you can save money and practice a slow fashion that is gentle for our planet.

Buy from Green-friendly Brands and Companies

Sustainable fashion is so popular that some of the largest companies around the world are opting to incorporate it. But you can find smaller, lesser-known brands online as well that has been going the green way from the time they began.

Return Them to the Manufacturer

Several brands will accept a used item from one of their merchandise if you return it for the recycling program. More often than not, the brands have connections with recycling centres and they exchange their old products for a set price. Many brands also accept clothing from other brands and recycle them for a longer shelf life.

Buy clothes when you need them and when you cannot wear them anymore, donate them. And if you cannot wear them or donate them, recycle your clothes. Recycling or upcycling your clothes means lesser clothes for landfill and lesser waste in our ecosystem. Here at Chalo Green, we turn waste into raw materials and thus do our bit in making fashion and lifestyle ethical and sustainable.
